Meta AI Gets Smarter: New Memory Feature and Personalized Responses Roll Out Across Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp

Meta is rolling out significant upgrades to its cross-platform chatbot, Meta AI, including a new “memory” feature and the ability to use data from Facebook and Instagram to deliver personalized responses. The updates aim to make interactions with Meta AI more intuitive and tailored to individual users, though they also raise questions about privacy and data usage.

Meta AI Now “Remembers” Key Details

In a blog post, Meta announced that users in the U.S. and Canada can now ask Meta AI to remember specific details about them during chats on Facebook, Messenger, WhatsApp (iOS and Android), and Instagram. For example, if a user mentions they love traveling or follow a vegan diet, Meta AI can store that information and use it to provide more relevant responses in future conversations.

This memory feature mirrors similar capabilities in OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini. It allows Meta AI to pick up on important contextual details, such as dietary preferences or hobbies, to enhance its recommendations. For instance, if a user previously mentioned they’re vegan and later asks for breakfast ideas, Meta AI will suggest plant-based options.

However, Meta clarified that the memory feature won’t work in group chats, and users can delete stored memories at any time.

Personalized Recommendations Using Meta Data

In a more controversial move, Meta AI will now use account information from across its apps—such as a user’s home location on Facebook or recently watched Instagram videos—to craft personalized responses. This means the chatbot can leverage data like your interests, preferences, and activity history to provide tailored recommendations.

Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg highlighted the feature in a post, explaining how it has helped him create bedtime stories for his daughters. “Meta AI will start to give you answers based on what preferences and information you’ve shared,” he wrote. “For example, it’s helped me come up with creative bedtime stories for my daughters, so if I ask it for a new one, it remembers they love mermaids.”

The personalized recommendations are currently available on Facebook, Messenger, and Instagram in the U.S. and Canada, with no option to opt out, according to a Meta spokesperson.

Privacy Concerns Loom

While Meta is framing these updates as a way to enhance user experience, the changes are likely to spark privacy concerns. Meta’s track record with data handling, particularly on Facebook, has left many users wary of how their information is used. The integration of personal data from across Meta’s platforms into Meta AI’s responses could further fuel skepticism.
